NSC Shake-Up Continues as Trump Administration Officials Are Asked to Leave

"General McMaster appreciates the good work accomplished in the NSC's intelligence directorate under Ezra Cohen's leadership", a spokesman said in a statement.

These personnel changes come amid an Atlantic report that an NSC staffer was sacked last month after a troubling memo he wrote arguing that "globalists", Islamists, and the "deep state" are working to undermine President Trump's agenda, and threatening the country.

Cohen-Watnick is the latest Trump loyalist to be fired by Gen. McMaster, whose security council continues to be overwhelmingly staffed with Obama holdovers (almost all of whom have retained their positions).

Nunes refused to identify the sources of his information, and the White House would neither confirm nor deny that Cohen-Watnick or Ellis had aided the Republican congressman. On Wednesday, radio host Laura Ingraham tweeted a months-old article from the New York Times about McMaster's "break with the administration on Islam". "Such a move could earn General McMaster a fourth star".

All three officials were reportedly members of the more nationalist-minded faction of Trump's administration, aligned with White House officials like Flynn and chief strategist Steve Bannon, who often butted heads with more establishment officials like McMaster - a clash The Weekly Standard described Wednesday night as the "McMaster-Bannon War".

Cohen-Watnick served at the Defense Intelligence Agency alongside Flynn, who ran that office until 2014.

Another top NSC official, Rich Higgins, who had written a memo for Trump arguing that a dark, "Maoist" alliance of "deep state" intelligence officials, bankers, "globalists" and the media were out to get him, was quietly let go in July, according to a report Wednesday by The Atlantic's Rosie Gray.

U.S. President Donald Trump walks from Marine One upon his return to the White House in Washington, U.S., March 19, 2017.

Roth said, "McMaster and the National Security Council (NSC), there's always a give and take as to what role the NSC plays in the development of foreign policy".

Michael Flynn to serve as the senior director for intelligence programs at the National Security Council, was sacked on Wednesday afternoon, according to two sources familiar with the matter. Last week, McMaster removed Derek Harvey, the top Middle East adviser on the NSC, from his post.

The firing comes amid more unrest in the White House. Cohen-Watnick later followed Flynn to Trump's transition team and the administration.

In early April, reports emerged that Rice on several occasions requested the identities of "masked" US persons in intelligence reports linked to President Donald Trump's transition and campaign.
