After his helicopter touched down in Ramallah, the king was received by Abbas and an honor guard before the two leaders went for a meeting and lunch.

"The visit reaffirms that brotherly Jordan is the closest to Palestine in all circumstances and times", Kheiry said.

During the shrine crisis, Abbas said he was suspending security ties with Israel until the metal detectors have been removed. It comes amid tensions between Israel and Abbas over a Jerusalem holy site, and Israel and Jordan over an incident in which an Israeli security guard in Amman killed two Jordanians after one of them attacked him. The measures triggered protests by Muslims.

The holy site is also revered by Jews, who call it the Temple Mount, but prayer and visiting rights have been managed under a delicate system known as the "status quo" which only allows Muslim worship at the site. A few hours later, the metal detectors were dismantled.

"It appears that King Abdullah wants to show through his visit that he stands with the Palestinian people in the battle for Jerusalem", Palestinian political analyst Abdel Majid Sweilem told AFP. Israel's foreign ministry said the guard acted in self-defence after being stabbed with a screwdriver by one of the men.

"This evaluation is very important for us to prepare for the coming stage we expect from Israel and from (Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu personally", Malki said.

The official, Mohammed Ishtayeh, said Sunday that the monarch is to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, who last week criticized the U.S. for allowing Israeli settlement construction to continue unabated by offering only silence on the issue, also said the Palestinians are still "committed" to a United States initiative. The step was seen by many in Israel as a capitulation and by Palestinians and the Arab world as a victory. Over the weekend, PLO Executive Committee member Hanan Ashrawi said that the advisor to the president and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, could not serve as a mediator between the PA and Israel because he is not sufficiently aware of events in the Middle East and "tends to adopt the Israeli position in a prominent fashion". According to Petra, he "confirmed the importance of working with the U.S. administration to move the peace process and relaunch serious and efficient negotiations based on the two state solution".
