White House: Trump 'Not Discussing' Firing Mueller

Special counsel Robert Mueller, who is probing the 2016 US election, asked the White House for records on former national security adviser Michael Flynn, US media reported Friday.

The Times reports that the request is the first known instance of Mueller's office asking the White House for documents in the ongoing investigation into possible ties between Trump campaign officials and the Russian government.

The newspaper said the investigators had questioned witnesses about whether Flynn was secretly paid by the Turkish government during the campaign.

Mueller has convened a grand jury in D.C. for the Russian Federation probe, a sign that the investigation into Russia's interference in the presidential election and Moscow's ties to the Trump campaign is heating up.

He will investigate whether the former Apprentice star tried to obstruct the course of justice by pushing for an end into the inquiry into his former national security adviser.

Trump has repeatedly denied allegations of collusion, saying he is the victim of a political "witch hunt" and "fake news".

Flynn was President Donald Trump's national security adviser for just 24 days, but he has become one of the central figures in the investigation of possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump presidential campaign.

Bharara was sacked by President Trump in March, even though Bharara said Trump invited him, shortly after the November 2016 election, to stay on.

A grand jury plays a key role in the U.S. judicial system when it comes to investigating potential crimes and in bringing charges.

The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the grand jury news, said the panel had begun its work in recent weeks and will likely continue for months.

If so, an indictment is produced and a case may go to trial.

Rather, they decide whether probable cause exists that a potential crime has been committed and if charges should be brought.
