Tropical Storm Franklin could reach hurricane strength before landfall in Mexico

Franklin's maximum sustained winds had decreased to 40 miles per hour (65 kph) since coming ashore overnight, but it was expected to strengthen again Wednesday while crossing the Bay of Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico.

A Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the coast of Mexico from Puerto de Veracruz to Rio Panuco.

Life-threatening flooding, damaging winds and rough seas will continue to batter the Yucatan Peninsula through at least Tuesday afternoon before Franklin emerges into the Bay of Campeche.

Franklin made landfall late Monday night near Pulticub, Mexico. It is then expected to make landfall a second time Thursday in eastern Mexico. However, no storm this season has lasted more than two days and none have produced peak winds above 57 miles per hour (50 knots), so Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) is just 44 percent of average for this date.

Meanwhile, a smattering of disorganized storms and showers in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean was given a low chance of becoming a cyclone over the next five days. They are also expecting there to be between two to four major hurricanes, which means they are Category 3, 4, or 5.

Franklin will lose some of its intensity as it crosses the Yucatan Peninsula and is temporarily cut off from the anomalously warm waters of the western Caribbean.

In addition to the heavy rain, waves in excess of 10 feet could reach the eastern Yucatan coast, including Cozumel and Cancun, by tonight, lingering into Tuesday. The storm is also expected to affect several Central American nations including Honduras, Nicaragua, and Belize.

A tropical storm warning was posted from Belize City north to the Mexican border and around the whole Yucatan.

"Some strengthening is expected before the center reaches the Yucatan Peninsula, and Franklin could be near hurricane intensity at landfall", it said in an advisory.

A high pressure system north of the affected region will likely keep the impact of the storm away from the United States.
