One dead, over 30 injured in blast near Lahore's Band Road

At least 22 people were injured when an explosion occurred, reportedly in a truck, in Lahore's Bund road area on Monday evening.

"The explosive material was planted inside a truck which was loaded with fruit", said Abdullah Khan Sumbal, a top government official in Lahore.

Rescue teams reached the scene and shifted the injured to Mayo Hospital and Mian Munshi Hospital, where emergency was declared.

Lahore has witnessed several terror attacks in recent months and the Monday's attack comes week after a bombing claimed by the Pakistani Taliban killed at least 26 people and injured dozens at a vegetable market in the provincial capital's Ferozepur area.

However this is the route which the estranged Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was about to travel from Islamabad which has prompted the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) said Sharif's route in the city would be revised now. "A minor girl is stated to be critical", he said. Up to 46 people were also injured. The powerful blast damaged, partially or heavily, more than 100 vehicles including cars, mini-trucks and motorcycles parked at the stand.

A spokesman for the Lahore electric supply company said the high-intensity blast badly damaged the circuit of the grid station.

The officials further added that investigation reports also indicate that the truck was brought from Swat and was parked in the area three days ago.

In April, six people were martyred and 15 others wounded when a suicide bomber targeted a population census team in Lahore's Bedian Road.

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shehbaz Sharif has instructed police authorities to file a report of the incident.
