EU Calls a Meeting of Ministers Over Egg Contamination

Britain, France, Sweden and Switzerland have also been warned to keep an eye out for tainted eggs.

The commissioner has convened a meeting of ministers and representatives of agencies of food safety in all the European Union countries involved, "as soon as all the facts will be at our disposal".

The contaminated eggs are a priori limited risks to the health of the consumer, since the doses of fipronil potentially ingested remain largely below the amounts considered harmful.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration said in a statement that these eggs were mostly sold to catering firms, cafeterias and cafes. Earlier reports from the European Food safety Authority (EFSA), one of which dates back as far as 2006, state that fipronil is "averagely to highly persistent' meaning that the substance remains present in the environment for months after spraying".

All of them stock British Lion shell eggs but they use imported eggs in many of their other foods containing eggs. The retailers affected are Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda, across a total of 11 products.

Supermarkets in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany have withdrawn millions of eggs from sale.

Twenty tonnes of the contaminated eggs have been sold, according to the Denmark's food safety authority.

A toxic eggs scandal has 17 countries keeping an eye out for a chemical called fipronil.

Agriculture officials in Portugal have moved to quell fears about contaminated eggs reaching supermarket shelves here, saying none of the affected lots were ever intended for this country.

Traceability on the eggs from the Netherlands contaminated with fipronil is continuing, according to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI).

The FSA stressed that the number of eggs that have come to Britain represents 0.007% of the eggs consumed in the United Kingdom every year, making it "very unlikely that there is any risk to public health from consuming these foods".

Fipronil can damage the kidney and liver if eaten in large quantities. Scores of farms in the Netherlands and Belgium have been shut.

Marieke van der Molen of the Dutch National Prosecutor's Office says investigators from the country's food safety watchdog are conducting the raids in the Netherlands.

The contaminated eggs have mainly come from the Netherlands, followed by Belgium and Germany.

That includes six Arab nations, three European countries and one East Asian nation.

More than 100 poultry farms have been closed during the investigation, and 26 suspects identified and evidence seized from their companies.
