United States destroyer in South China Sea called 'provocation' by Beijing

It continued that the United States sailing had violated both global and Chinese law and, at the same time, had posed a threat to Beijing's security and sovereignty.

The Foreign Ministry pointed out that that the so-called United States "freedom of navigation" mission was carried out without authorization from Beijing, with has "indisputable sovereignty over the Nansha Islands (Spratley) and its surrounding waters".

China has constructed airstrips and hangars and protected harbors for the air and naval units in the Paracel Islands.

"Certain external forces are swimming against the current and continuing to stir up trouble under the pretext of "freedom of navigation, '" Mr. Geng said".

More significantly, the latest U.S. naval patrol comes days after a meeting of China and ASEAN foreign ministers in the Philippines had agreed a framework for a code of conduct in the South China Sea which is contested by multiple claimants including China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and the Philippines.

The operation took part in the South China Sea amid a backdrop of increasing tension in the region due to the ongoing North Korea crisis.

China expressed its "strong dissatisfaction" with the U.S. over the Navy's latest freedom of navigation operation in which a warship sailed past one of China's man-made islands in the strategic South China Sea.

"The document nearly didn't happen because of disagreement over references to the South China Sea disputes, with Vietnam leading the push for stronger language despite objections from Cambodia and the host, the Philippines".

The U.S. Navy challenged China's vast claims to the South China Sea on Thursday, Navy officials revealed.

"China is very displeased with this and will bring up the issue with the U.S. side", the ministry said.

He said there was a limit to Vietnam's approach because of the uncertainty of the Trump administration's Asia-Pacific policy and its lack of interest in challenging China on the maritime front.

And today it was revealed President Donald Trump has sent a direct message to China by deploying a fearsome Navy destroyer near a Chinese island in a move which could be interpreted as "back us or else".

Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Chris Logan declined to comment on whether there had been a freedom of navigation operation, but said: "All operations are conducted in accordance with global law and demonstrate that the United States will fly, sail and operate wherever worldwide law allows". "The two most recent examples of this are at Tree Island and North Island in the Amphitrite Group", the think tank said.

"They called and said "please turn around, you are in our waters", the official said.

The Joint Communiqué reflects the consensus of the ministers on issues concerning ASEAN, wherein Vietnam and the Philippines are member states. "We told them we are a usa [ship] conducting routine operations in worldwide waters".

However, on Friday, China's Foreign Ministry protested against the voyage of the USA naval vessel in what it keeps claiming are Chinese territorial waters.
