Senate may expel over Trump assassination quip

A Democratic Missouri state senator has apologized for a now-deleted Facebook post wishing for the assassination of President Trump.

The post also resulted in a U.S. Secret Service investigation. "She should resign immediately".

Despite at least one call to resign by Republican state Rep. Kirk Mathews, Ms. Chappelle-Nadal said she's not going anywhere.

"I can not say for certainty if her remarks meet the standard of prosecution under federal law", Parson said.

That sentiment was echoed by Stephen Webber, chairman of the Missouri Democratic Party. Parson is the presiding officer of the Senate, though he can only vote to break ties and cannot sponsor legislation or make motions for votes.

Chappelle-Nadal, from the St. Louis suburb of University City, said constituents in her predominantly black district are concerned about how Trump blamed "both sides" of the clashes in Charlottesville.

In a statement, the Secret Service said that they investigate all threats to the president "whether they be direct, implied, or comments in passing".

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) condemned the post and told the Post-Dispatch that she believes Chappelle-Nadal should resign from her post. She was specifically frustrated with the domestic terror attack at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville. I have deleted it, and it should have been deleted, but there is something way more important that we should be talking about. The remarks were in response to another user's comment and, despite calls for her to resign, she's blaming President Donald Trump.

The Facebook comment brought upon Chappelle-Nadal a ream of criticism from Missouri's national and local leaders. "Republicans and Democrats have called on her to resign", he tweeted. "I believe they should".

Despite the condemnations, Chappelle-Nadal said she has no plans to step down. "No one is going to speak for African-Americans like I do". Maria Chappelle-Nadal's disgusting comments. "If they paid half as much attention to the nuclear waste in our community as they did to me, and what I say we'd be in a much better place".

Chappelle-Nadal was a prominent voice during the protests in Ferguson, Missouri, after the August 2014 fatal police shooting of Michael Brown.
