Counterprotesters march toward rally in Boston

Boston is bracing for possible clashes between conservative activists and counterprotesters as thousands of people descended on the city Saturday. But as of about 1:30 p.m., police on scene were dealing mostly with counter-protesters. Hundreds of others danced in circles and sang, "Hey hey, ho ho".

Trump's messages have fueled the escalating rhetoric from "alt-right" figures and white supremacists across the United States and prompted local and federal law enforcement officials to warn about the potential for more violence in the coming days.

One person was killed and nineteen injured in a auto rampage, when suspect James Fields Jr. drove his vehicle into a crowd of counter-protesters. The situation quickly calmed.

An estimated 15,000 counter-protesters marched through the city to historic Boston Common, where many gathered near a bandstand abandoned early by conservatives who had planned to deliver a series of speeches. The handful of rally attendees gathered beneath a pavilion near the center of the Common, surrounded by metal barriers and dozens of police.

That aside, one thing was clear in Boston on August 19: There were definitely way more counter protesters there. "We just can't sit down for this one".

John Medlar, who said he is an organizer for Boston Free Speech, said the group has no affiliation with the white supremacists who marched in Charlottesville, Boston.com reported.

"I'm a black woman living in Roxbury", Monica Cannon, a Black Lives Matter Boston activist said.

A so-called "free speech" rally in Boston on Saturday is expected to draw some of the same white supremacist groups that participated in the violent events of Charlottesville last weekend. Yet, leaders of the Ku Klux Klan expect KKK members to show up. But they don't have the right to create unsafe conditions.

"While we maintain that every individual is entitled to their freedom of speech - and defend that basic human right - we will not be offering our platform to racism or bigotry".

Events are planned in cities across the country including Atlanta, Dallas and New Orleans. Meanwhile, supporters of the Confederate monuments are also organizing, with rallies being planned in Hot Springs, Ark.

Despite this statement, opponents feared that white nationalists might show up in Boston regardless, and turned out in force against hate.

And hours before the rally began, thousands of counterprotesters began marching around the city. We're not standing (for) white supremacy.

Walsh tweeted Saturday morning, asking the participants to remain peaceful.

A counterprotester held up a sign on Tremont Street. The older daughter's sign read "I'm only five and even I know Black Lives Matter". They also built a cordon around the site of the rally to keep the two groups separate. "We don't want you here". The response, in a word, is heartening.
