HTC Vive Receives Permanent $200 Price Cut

HTC Vive Receives Permanent $200 Price Cut

Unfortunately that news is taking a while to filter down to Australia, as the HTC Vive Australian site still lists the Vive as A$1,199.00, including the Front Defence game. Now a majority of people crave to own a VR headset to experience this novelty or simply as a status symbol. The cost of the system has been brought down to $599.

The Vive has always been the high-end pick of the current virtual reality bunch, and as a result is more expensive than rivals Oculus Rift and the PlayStation VR. Although this is quite a large price decrease, as $200 could net someone a PS4 or XBox One in some areas, does this make the technology a viable option for the everyday consumer? For that, we'll need further price cuts, advancements and adoption beyond gaming (Facebook).

Last but not least, there's a one-month-free subscription for Viveport, giving you access to vast number of VR applications, all optimized for HTC's popular VR headset.

"Since launching past year, we have been rapidly growing our ecosystem and expanding our retail footprint across Europe, to continue to reach new audiences with Vive", said HTC Vive's general manager for Europe, Paul Brown.

The kit arrives with basically all the equipment needed for a full room-scale VR experience, including the Vive headset, two wireless controllers, and two lighthouse base stations, minus the VR-ready PC of course.

At this year's E3, Bethesda announced that the upcoming Fallout 4 VR and Doom VFR would be releasing on the Vive, with Fallout scheduled to drop this coming October. This sale mirrors the $200 price slash of Oculus Rift VR headset as part of the "Summer of Rift" sale.

The Oculus Rift with Touch bundle includes the headset, two sensors, cables and several titles compatible with this device, like Medium, Dead and Buried and Robo Recall. The rival VR headset is now $399 during the limited-time sale, and will cost $499 when it is over.
