Trump says Canada and Mexico being too hard in NAFTA renegotiations

Trump, a Republican, promised during his campaign to build the wall and overhaul or eliminate Nafta (the North American Free Trade Agreement), which he cast as killing jobs and exacerbating the USA deficit, and to adopt a more protectionist stance for trade generally.

Trump was at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.

President Trump said on Sunday that he may terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) because Mexico and Canada are "being very hard".

In a tweet on Sunday, Trump clears the air on who would pay for the wall - Mexico.

And VanderWal says the remake of NAFTA will likely set a precedent for future trade deals.

During his campaign-style speech in Arizona, the President said that he doubted the USA could renegotiate NAFTA with Mexico and Canada and ultimately terminating the agreement would be a likely outcome.

He added, "I don't have any question that Mexico will pay at least part of the tab".

Referring to a Democratic senator up for re-election in 2018, Claire McCaskill, he added: "I will also be going to a wonderful state, Missouri, that I won by a lot in '16".

"With Mexico being one of the highest crime nations in the world", he wrote, "we must have THE WALL". Both Mexico and Canada said they don't believe the deal needs major changes, in stark contrast to the opinion of the Trump administration.
