Houston police officer reportedly drowns in Harvey floodwaters

A police officer in his patrol auto reportedly drowned Sunday morning after becoming trapped in the floodwaters in Houston.

"On behalf of the people of the city of Houston and our great city, I want to take the time to extend my condolences, my prayers, to his family, specifically to his - specifically to his wife, Cheryl, to his son as well as to his daughter". According to CBS Dallas Fort Worth, Perez's family had asked him to stay home on Sunday because of the risky weather conditions, but Sgt. Perez insisted.

Perez, a veteran of 34 years with the city's police force, left his home at 4 a.m.in heavy rain and spent 2 1/2 hours driving around as he tried to get to work. "He could not find a path".

Perez was a "dedicated individual that would not just show up to work", Acevedo said. Acevedo said. Search crews even enlisted the help of the volunteer "Cajun Navy" to help look for Perez, Acevedo said. "We utilized other investigative techniques to try to locate him", said Acevedo.

Perez's body was eventually located in floodwaters near Hardy Tollway and Beltway 8. "They know it's going to be a while because we have some work to do ― work that he would want us to do".

At the news conference, Acevedo became choked up describing Perez as "one of the sweetest people I've ever met".

Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the Texas Gulf Coast Friday night, bringing heavy rains and risky flooding across southeastern Texas that is expected to continue throughout the week.
