National Football League cancels Dallas Cowboys-Houston Texans preseason game

Proceeds from Thursday's Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans game will be donated to help victims of Hurricane Harvey.

The game had originally been scheduled to be played Thursday at Houston's NRG Stadium, but devastating floodwaters resulting from the rainfall from Hurricane Harvey forced the game to be moved to the Cowboys' home facility. Water has receded enough in some places that the team can return to Houston. The Texans practiced Monday and Tuesday at the Cowboys' practice facility.

"At this time, the priority of our organization is getting our players, coaches and staff back home to be reunited with their families, many of whom have been evacuated from their homes and are now sheltered", said a statement distributed by the Texans.

"It is what it is", Texans outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus told the Houston Chronicle when asked about the team being forced to relocate temporarily to Dallas following the Texans' game in New Orleans against Saints on Saturday night. "We've been truly inspired by the resilience we have seen as people continue to deal with what's going on".

Fans that have purchased tickets to Thursday's game will have the option to donate the money to relief efforts or request a refund through Ticketmaster.

The Texans have been gone from Houston since last Wednesday morning.

It seems like the National Football League is listening to J.J. Watt. "There is so much devastation in the city and the region and we want to be part of the recovery process". No decisions have been made on the duration of the team's stay in Dallas or on details regarding Thursday's preseason game against the Cowboys. As of Wednesday afternoon, the fund had raised more than $5.8 million.

Watt set up a page on YouCaring.com and upped his goal of $500,000 in funds for flood relief after raising $200,000 in two hours.

In addition, the NFL Foundation is matching the Texans' $1 million relief donation, Cowboys executive vice president Charlotte Jones Anderson announced earlier this week. He also raised the goal of the fundraiser to $10 million.
