Joe Paterno Knew Jerry Sandusky Sexually Abused Children in 2001

McQueary, a one-time Penn State football assistant who became the star witness in the case against Sandusky, told state police in 2011 that he'd visited Paterno on a Saturday morning 10 years earlier to tell him that the previous evening he had witnessed "an extreme sexual act occurring between Sandusky and a young boy" in a football locker room shower, according to the report by Pennsylvania police.

In a report first filed by CNN, there is evidence that Joe Paterno knew years before Jerry Sandusky's arrest that his longtime assistant might be sexually abusing children.

The police report, CNN says, "lays out an account from whistleblower Mike McQueary, who reported to Paterno an incident he had just witnessed in a locker room between Sandusky and a young boy".

McQueary told Paterno he had witnessed Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in the showers of Penn State's facilities in 2001.

"Success without honor is an unseasonal dish; it will satisfy your hunger but it won't taste good", Paterno once said in one of his most famous quotes.

Attorney's for the Paterno family could not be reached for comment by CNN.

McQueary has testified in court about the 2001 incident and his subsequent exchange with Paterno, but he never revealed - nor was he asked to under oath - details about Paterno hearing another complaint prior to that incident, CNN reported. This contradicts Paterno's Grand Jury testimony from 2012 where he said he wasn't aware of Sandusky's abuse until McQueary told him.

Paterno died in January 2012.

In June 2012, Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of sexual abuse involving 10 boys and was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison.

Because of McQueary and Paterno legally doing the right thing and following their "chain of command" when reporting sexual abuse, new laws have been put in place where someone is required to report any sexual molestation to the police.

According to the report, two men claimed they reported their abuse at Sandusky's hands directly to Paterno in the 1970s.

During former Penn State president Graham Spanier's child endangerment trial this spring, former Penn State athletic director Tim Curley testified that he had discussed a 1998 allegation against Sandusky with Paterno. "I wish I had done more", was his response when he was sacked from his job after 46 years at the helm.
