USA and South Korea deploy 4 more Thaad launchers amid Pyongyang threats

USA and South Korea deploy 4 more Thaad launchers amid Pyongyang threats

The country tested its developmental Hwasong-14 ICBMs twice in July and analysts said the flight data from the launches indicate the missiles could cover a broad area of the continental U.S., including major cities such as Los Angeles and Chicago, when perfected.

The proposal, which also calls for freezing the assets of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has been circulated to the 15 members of the Security Council, according to the diplomat, who asked not to be identified discussing internal deliberations. The United States wants the UN Security Council to impose an oil embargo on North Korea, ban its exports of textiles and the hiring of North Korean labourers overseas, and to subject leader Kim Jong Un to an asset freeze and travel ban, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters on Wednesday. That test, along with a series of missile launches, showed it was close to achieving its goal of developing a powerful nuclear weapon that could reach the United States.

"There is no difference from the Park Geun-hye government in claiming that the THAAD deployment was aimed to protect people from North Korea (DPRK)'s nuclear and missile threats", said Park Jung Eun, deputy secretary general at the liberal civic group People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD).

"It is time to step up sanctions and secure sufficient military means to deter them in order to stop North Korea's nuclear armament", Lee said.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said Beijing supports further United Nations action against North Korea but also wants to see renewed efforts to begin dialogue involving all sides. "We ultimately need talks with North Korea, but it is not the time right now to speak of a dialogue with North Korea".

On Thursday morning, South Korean President Moon Jae-in met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo in Vladivostok where they are attending the Eastern Economic Forum, hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The statement says both leaders stressed that the global community has condemned North Korea's "provocations".

North Korea says it needs its weapons to protect itself from USA aggression. Putin and Abe are set to meet later Thursday.

On April 26, two mobile launchers and other THAAD elements were delivered in the middle of night to the former golf course at Soseong-ri village in Seongju county, North Gyeongsang province.

The Ministry of National Defense said Thursday that four launchers for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) antimissile system were moved to a US base in Seongju County, North Gyeongsang, completing the deployment of the American antimissile battery.

The deployment has drawn strong objections from China, which believes the system's radar could be used to look deeply into its territory and will upset the regional security balance.
