Fine european record : Google filed an action for annulment

Google has appealed the multi-billion pound fine issued by the European Union for the alleged abuse of its dominant position in the search engine market.

In June, the European Commission slapped Google with $2.74 billion in fine for anti-trust violations related to the search engine giant's favoritism towards its online shopping service over competitors.

The European Commission said "it will defend its decision in court", while Google declined to comment on details of its appeal.

The company has submitted plans on how it plans to stop favouring its shopping service and these are now being reviewed by Brussels.

And while the two cases are clearly different - and the Intel verdict remains a partial one at this stage (the sanction has not been overturned as yet) - it's certainly unusual for Europe's courts to rule against Commission verdicts, offering some hope to Google's lawyers they can successful argue against the regulator's rationale.

The fine over Google Shopping broke the previous European Union record for a monopoly case against USA chipmaker Intel of 1.06 billion euros in 2009 and made the EU the global leader in regulating Silicon Valley giants.

Intel Corp. waited eight years for a ruling on its legal challenge to a 2009 fine only to be told last week that the General Court must re-examine the case.

In an interview with AFP, Europe's anti-trust chief Margrethe Vestager last week said some of that proposal "pointed in the very right direction", but could only be judged once in effect.

Regulators are also expected to levy fines in separate investigations into Google's Android mobile-phone software - possibly as soon as next month - and the AdSense advertising service.
