Trump was right; Obama admin did wiretap his campaign

There are many potential vulnerabilities in President Trump's legal defense in the multipronged investigation into his Russian ties-Jared Kushner, Donald Trump Jr., Mike Flynn, Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, advisers Roger Stone and Carter Page, to name a few in Trump's orbit-but former campaign chief Paul Manafort, so far, appears to be the biggest liability.

So the real story here is not the "vindication" of Trump but that the then-Presidential candidate hired someone whose actions were deemed suspicious enough by top Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department officials that they concluded he could be an agent of a foreign power.

According to CNN, some of the intelligence obtained on Manafort included communications which drew investigators' concerns that he had "encouraged the Russians" to help with the campaign.

The latest story on Manafort claims the secret court that oversees warrant requests under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) initially authorised monitoring of Manafort but discontinued it at some point in 2016 for lack of evidence, CNN said, citing one of its sources. That warrant eventually expired and nothing of note, or at least worthy of criminal charges, came up at the time so the surveillance was dropped.

The surveillance was paused previous year for lack of evidence, but then resumed after a new FISA warrant was obtained. They originally became interested in Manafort due to his consulting work on behalf of Viktor Yanukovych, the pro-Russia former Ukrainian president who's been accused of corruption.

While Manafort resigned from the Trump campaign in August of previous year, after only five months on the campaign, he continued to speak with Trump after the Republican took office.

President Trump has been known to make false claims on Twitter, for which his critics and the media regularly skewer him. But he has consistently been at or near the center of the Justice Department investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether Trump associates colluded in those efforts.

Manafort is a key figure in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's involvement in the election.

After recently claiming that allegations the Obama administration wiretapped the Trump Tower were groundless, CNN reported new details on September 18 showing that the wiretaps may have taken place.

It's unclear when exactly surveillance of Manafort restarted, but in August, CNN reported that USA intelligence intercepted suspected Russian intelligence officers discussing Manafort in the summer of 2016, months before the election.

President Donald Trump was ridiculed mercilessly by the mainstream media after he declared that he was wiretapped by his predecessor in the lead-up to his epic electoral showdown with Hillary Clinton past year.

The raid was followed up with a warning to Manafort from Mueller's prosecutors that they planned to indict him.

To get a search warrant, according to the report, Mueller's team had to show probable cause that Manafort's Alexandria, Va., home contained evidence of a crime, and to enter the home unannounced, it had to convince a judge that Manafort may destroy evidence.

"They seem to be pursuing this more aggressively, taking a much harder line, than you'd expect to see in a typical white collar case", Jimmy Gurulé, a Notre Dame law professor and former federal prosecutor, told the Times.

The New York Times published a report about the FBI's dramatic raid on Manafort's home, during which agents allegedly tried to find proof, including tax documents and banking records, pertaining to Manafort's reported collaboration with Russian operatives.
