Korea near nuclear test site

Chinese earthquake officials said the magnitude 3.4 quake detected on Saturday was a "suspected explosion" but both the CTBTO, which monitors nuclear tests, and a South Korean meteorological agency official said they believed it was a natural quake.

South Korea's weather agency has stated that it may have been a natural event, Seoul's Yonhap News Agency has said.

It was Trump's most direct military threat to attack North Korea and his latest expression of concern about Pyongyang's repeated launching of ballistic missiles over Japan and underground nuclear tests.

North Korea carried out a massive nuclear test on 3 September which was widely condemned at the UN.

A secondary tremor detected after that test could have been caused by the collapse of a tunnel at the mountainous site, experts said at the time.

The administration said in a statement on its website that the quake, which occurred around 0830 GMT, was recorded a depth of zero kilometres.

The first sign Pyongyang has conducted a nuclear test is usually seismic activity.

The US Geological Survey said it could not conclusively confirm whether the quake, which it measured at magnitude 3.5, was man-made or natural.

On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered new sanctions that open the door wider to blacklisting people and entities doing business with the isolated nation, including its shipping and trade networks, further tightening the screws on Pyongyang's missile programme.

The North, which says it needs nuclear weapons to protect itself against the threat of invasion by a hostile U.S., responded on Friday with a rare personal rebuke from Kim, who called Trump "mentally deranged" and a "dotard" and threatened the "highest level of hard-line countermeasure in history".

The pair had swapped insults, with Mr Trump calling the North Korean a suicidal "rocket man" and being labelled "mentally deranged" and "a dotard" in return.

Touching on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's threat to launch highest-level countermeasures, in particular, Kang said such a remark would only deepen North Korea's isolation and called on the North to immediately come to the path of dialogue.
