Gunman opens fire at Tennessee church

Police say he wore a ski mask as he walked into Nashville's Burnette Chapel Church of Christ and opened fire.

The gunman, whom police ID'd as Emanuel Kidega Samson, then entered the church with a pair of pistols and started firing. Police say additional charges are expected.

Reports also state that the FBI will be initiating a civil rights investigation in association with the shooting at the predominantly white church at the hands of a black assailant.

Local police also requested the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to run an "urgent trace" on a firearm, an ATF representative told CNN.

Church members told police the suspect had attended services a year or two ago.

Police initially said the suspect was African-American but later identified him as Sudanese with legal U.S. residency.

The Tennessean identified the suspect as 25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson, a Sudanese immigrant who police said is a legal USA resident, although not a citizen.

The gunman pulled into the church's parking lot as services were ending.

Many parishioners remained inside the church for hours after the shooting, speaking to police and receiving counseling. Engle then grabbed his own firearm from his auto and held the suspect off until authorities arrived on the scene. She was a caring woman who loved God, according to her daughter Breanna.

Leshea White, center, and Kimberly Stallworth hug their uncle, Roger Bracey, who was at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ when shots were fired on Sunday in Antioch, Tenn.

About 50 people were still inside the sanctuary during the shooting.

Gunfire continued to echo through the building as Samson made his way silently through the church.

John Howser, spokesman for Vanderbilt University Medical Center said, "The two critical patients suffered gunshot wounds to their chest and torso". It would not release the name.

Minerva Rosa has been a member at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in the Nashville neighborhood of Antioch for eight years.

A church usher, Caleb Engle, 22, confronted the gunman and was "pistol whipped", Aaron said.

It was reported that more charges might follow Samson as four guns believed to be his and a rifle and three pistols were found in his SUV.

"The wound sent Samson to the floor". Engel who was bleeding from his head due to the attack, then ran outside to his vehicle to get his gun and held the shooter at gunpoint until the police arrived at the scene.

Police have released the identity of a suspect in a Tennessee church shooting.

"You don't know how long you have her or anyone, because when I said bye to her this morning, I didn't know that was the last time", Breanna Smith told NBC News. "He was the hero today".

"He's the hero", Anderson said.

'I've been going to this church my whole life. I think maybe the devil got to him. "They are hurting as well", Engle said in a statement. He credits the first responders and medical staff who so quickly responded to the scene.

Emanuel Kidega Samson is seen being transported to a Tennessee jail in a photo released by the Metro Nashville Police Department on September 24, 2017. She said she heard the pastor shout "Run! Run!"
