Star Trek: Discovery opening credits are unlike any you've seen

Both Star Trek fans and media-industry watchers were incredulous when first laid out its plans for Star Trek: Discovery, which premieres Sunday night.

And for Andre Bormanis, former science advisor on series like The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Enterprise, the arrival of the new show held a special significance - it was the first time in nearly 25 years that the writer and astrophysics expert was able to watch an episode of Star Trek on TV without having fact-checked the ending.

More importantly, it also calls back to the female First Officer known only as Number One (above) played by Majel Barrett in the very first Star Trek pilot The Cage, before her character was cut from the approved show (only Leonard Nimoy's Spock was carried over from the pilot).

"Star Trek: Discovery" premieres at 8 p.m. Sunday evening on CBS, with all subsequent episodes streaming on CBS All Access, the network's digital subscription video-on-demand and live-streaming service. Episode 2 is available exclusively on CBS All Access.

Outside of the United States, excluding Canada, Netflix subscribers will be able to stream Star Trek: Discovery included in their monthly fee.

"Discovery" had a hard gestation process, and so there are a number of narrative hiccups, likely resulting from the departure of original showrunner Bryan Fuller while Season One was still being mapped out. It doesn't help matters that the Shenzhou looks way more high-tech than anything on the original series or TNG, and that the Starfleet uniforms on the show barely resemble those of the era that it's supposedly just 10 years behind.

"Star Trek: Discovery's" first two episodes introduced the viewers to a new Starfleet crew.

Executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Heather Kadin, Gretchen Berg, Aaron Harberts, and Alex Kurtzman, and actors James Frain, Sonequa Martin, Mary Chieffo, and Jason Isaacs of "Star Trek: Discovery" speak onstage during the CBS portion of the 2017 Summer Television Critics Association Press Tour at CBS Studio Center on August 1, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. It may take some time to grow on some fans, while others may take to the new opening sequence right away. Usually the violent "other" in Star Trek lore, Discovery gives the familiar antagonists their own point of view, backstory, culture, and reasons to fight. Instead, it's hoping that the built-in "Star Trek" fanbase will be enough to build a solid audience for CBS All Access.

This includes the big screen outings, which found recent success between the latest two TV series in the form of JJ Abrams reboot of the original canon in 2009, 2013 follow-up Star Trek Into Darkness and last year's Star Trek Beyond. It seems like we're getting just another grimdark war show, this one slapped with the Star Trek brand, but having little to do with that brand's core ideas.
