USA says it will work with India against terror havens

"There shall not be any boots on the ground from India", Ms. Sitharaman said while speaking to reporters after delegation level talks with the visiting U.S. Defence Secretary James Mattis.

Both parties emphasized the need to combat terrorism with Sitharaman urging Mattis to raise the issues of alleged safe havens for terrorists in Pakistan with Islamabad.

Instead, India will expand development activities to help stabilise the war-torn country, said Sitharaman.

"We are also at the moment training their officials in good governance... I think Pakistan will find nothing out of line with India and the United States' alignment in the same fight", he added.

According to an official statement from the Pentagon, Mattis will look to "underscore the enduring USA commitment to strategic partner India". Mr. Mattis could push for Indian troops in Afghanistan.

But Ms Sitharaman minced no words as she added: "The very same forces which did find safe haven in Pakistan were the forces that hit NY as well as Mumbai".

Situation in our neighbourhood and menace of cross-border terrorism were discussed in depth: Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman after talks with US Defence Secretary. The United States, India and Japan annually conduct naval exercises in the Bay of Bengal to improve coordination between their navies.

Both leaders strongly condemned Pakistan for offering safe haven for terrorists from across the globe.

All this could be bad news for Pakistan, which has made several failed attempts to paint India in bad light in front of the global community, possibly to brush under the carpet its own failure to deal with terrorism on its own soil.

AFP reported that according to India it needs at least 100 single-engine fighters to counter the growing air threat posed by China and Pakistan. But this time Mattis will head straight to Afghanistan after India. "There is a challenge to keep your waters free for legitimate navigation, trade and energy transport and again, India have a convergence of connectivity, various theatres particularly like Afghanistan", Sarna said.

The two-day visit starting Tuesday aims at strengthening defence partnership between the two nations as US President Donald Trump envisions a stronger role for India in the Asian region. We look forward to sharing some of our most advanced defence technologies through the defense technology and trade initiative.
