Spanish Deputy PM insists Catalan referendum not to take place

"These articles have been violated by the order sent to Spanish telecommunications operators to cut access to web pages that inform about the referendum on self-determination, as well as those internet domains that are publicized or published to the social networks of the. members of the Government", the Catalan government complains in the letter.

On Monday - a day before Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House - I read Nauert's remarks to Sanders and asked if the USA would endorse an independent Catalonia after the controversial vote Sunday.

Trump said he's been watching the situation unfold in the region of Catalonia, whose leaders have vowed to hold a referendum Sunday on independence from Spain.

"I'm just for a united Spain", said Mr Trump, who cast doubt on polling data predicting a "yes" vote for independence will win.

Oliver Jones from Capital Economics said: "In Spain, a referendum on Catalan independence is set to occur on 1st October".

The Spanish government says it has systematically dismantled the logistics Catalonia's government put in place to hold the referendum and any result would no longer be meaningful.

The ministry had announced earlier in the day it would begin co-ordinating all police efforts in Catalonia to crack down on preparations for the vote, including sending direct orders to the Mossos, as the north-eastern region's largest police force are often called.

Spain's central government has been taking a series of measures to prevent the independence vote.

Over in Madrid, hundreds of supporters of the referendum gathered in solidarity in Puerta del Sol square, which hosted scores of anti-austerity protests during the Spanish economic crisis.

The Catalan government maintains the referendum will go ahead although it has not explained where people will vote if they can not access the voting booths.

Police have seized almost 10 million ballots for the vote and have closed down 59 websites that provide information about the referendum.

Many had not yet received information about where or when they would be working after the state-run postal service was ordered to stop all mail related to the vote, a parliamentary spokeswoman for one separatist party said. He said Puigdemont could also be arrested for misuse of public funds as the crime carries a jail sentence. He has promised to declare independence within 48 hours of a victory for the yes campaign.
