Erdogan points out Mossad's role in northern Iraq poll

Israel has denied Turkey's previous claims of involvement in the vote, but has welcomed the Kurds' vote for independence.

Speaking at a meeting with visiting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Tehran, he said that the recent referendum threatens the future of the region, the supreme leader's official news website reported.

Iran, Turkey and Iraq will have to achieve their "strategic objectives" in the region by taking "serious and necessary" measures, he added.

Baghdad imposed a ban on all global flights to Kurdish airports on Friday prompting an exodus of foreigners.

According to him, the creation of a new state in Iraq is unsafe both for Turkey and Iran. Turkey had already shut down its border with Iraqi Kurdistan.

Mr Erdogan said on Saturday that Iraqi Kurdistan "will pay a price" for the "unacceptable" referendum. In Turkey, a 30-year insurgency waged by Kurdistan's Workers' Party (PKK) militants has recently flared up since a ceasefire broke down nearly two years ago. Later the group changed its demands to Kurdish autonomy in Turkey.

Last week, the Iranian Army and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) staged joint military drills along the country's western border areas.

The two governments have taken opposing sides in the six-year civil war in Syria but relations have thawed this year with them both joining Russian Federation as co-sponsors of peace talks which began in Kazakstan in January.

Speaking about developments in war-torn Syria, Erdogan stressed the importance of the Astana talks, which are being conducted by Iran, Turkey and Russian Federation, in order to keep their fight against Jabhat Fateh al Sham and Daesh.

Turkey and Iran both have a sizeable Kurdish community and fear last week's vote will encourage their own Kurdish populations to do the same.

Qatar, a longtime Turkish ally, hosted Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif for talks on Tuesday as the crisis pushes it closer to Tehran.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in the Iranian capital on Wednesday for key talks with senior Iranian officials.

Iran's reformist Shargh newspaper said Erdogan's visit was an "opportunity to establish the basis for a new regional order and new alliances".

Erdogan says the trade volume target of $30 billion between two countries was at the top of the agenda.

He also went on to mention the existing potentials in various sectors such as mining, petrochemicals and energy in Iran, saying: "We welcome investment by Irish businesspeople in various projects in our country and Iran can be a reliable source for meeting the needs of European countries in the field of energy".
