Iran Guard Chief Warns US Against Imposing New Sanctions

Iranian authorities have sent a note of warning to the USA stating that American regional military bases would be at risk if further sanctions were imposed on Tehran.

Jafari rejected the idea of negotiating with Washington over regional issues and said if the U.S. designates the elite Revolutionary Guards Corps a terrorist group, it will in turn consider the United States military a terrorist group.

IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari also told a gathering of military commanders in Tehran on Sunday that the sanctions would fail to achieve their goal of dragging Iran to the table of negotiations aimed at curbing its regional clout, IRNA reported.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Iran will react appropriately to the stances of President Trump towards Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)- the nuclear accord which Tehran reached with the U.S. and other countries in 2015 to limit its nuclear program in exchange for lifting of sanctions.

"The behavior of the United States toward Iran shows that we can't base our foreign policy on the nuclear agreement alone".

Trump has until October 15 to recertify the deal.

"The Americans should know that the Islamic Republic of Iran will use the Trump administration's stupid behaviour as an opportunity to enhance its conventional missile, regional, and defensive programs", General Jafari underlined.

The remarks, carried by Iran's Tasnim news agency, came following reports that the USA could blacklist the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist group as part of a broad new strategy for dealing with the Islamic Republic to be announced by President Donald Trump.

The White House announced Friday that Trump will announce in the coming days tough new measures for responding to Iran's "bad behavior", including responses to Tehran's ballistic missile tests, support for terrorist groups throughout the Middle East, and cyber operations.

The Qods Force and individuals and entities associated with IRGC are on the list, but the organization as a whole is not.

During a meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly last month, Iranian diplomats told the US and others that "it could discuss the missile program to remove concerns", an Iranian source with knowledge of the meeting told Reuters.
