Trump warns 'disgusting' press after nuclear policy report

Trump - a president who's quick to shout "fake news!"

Eleven minutes later, Trump tweeted a warning shot that appeared to threaten action by the Federal Communications Commission: 'With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License?

NBC's story was based on information from three anonymous officials the broadcaster said were in the room at the meeting of US national security leaders. On some days, the majority of the tweets fluttering from the Oval Office focus on the press.

"General Mattis put out a statement, or is putting out a statement, saying that was fake news, that it was just mentioned that way", he said.

"Recent reports that the president called for an increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal are absolutely false", Pentagon chief Jim Mattis said in a statement. Further, they said Trump not only asked about more nuclear weapons, but also about increasing US troops and military equipment.

It states that "Congress should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances".

President Donald Trump on Wednesday dismissed a report that said he wants to increase the country's nuclear stockpile by a factor of ten, accusing the press of making it up entirely. Trump said he wanted to have that same number now, NBC reported. "And you have a responsibility to tell the truth, to be accurate". Earlier in the day, Trump on Twitter dismissed that report as "pure fiction" and raised the possibility that he would support stripping the broadcast licenses of news networks that report what he believes to be inaccurate information.

Trump's threat to challenge the broadcast licences that NBC holds with the FCC for its owned-and-operated stations recalls President Richard Nixon's similar threats against the Washington Post's parent company at the height of the Watergate scandal in the 1970s.

"If I walked down this hallway and asked, I don't think I'd find one media person who voted for Trump, and he got 45% of the national vote", Rep. Dave Brat, a conservative Virginia Republican, told TIME in the Capitol Building on Wednesday.

The July 20 meeting followed one held the day before at the White House Situation Room, when Trump asked military leaders to fire the commander of USA forces in Afghanistan.
