U.S. flies strategic bombers over Korean peninsula

South Korea's spy agency told lawmakers after the September 23 mission that North Korea failed to detect the B-1B bombers as they flew in global airspace east of the country. This positive process is worth a try", said an editorial in the state mouthpiece Global Times, following yesterday's military exercises."War would be a nightmare for the Korean Peninsula and surrounding regions.

The bombers took off from the US Pacific territory of Guam, before entering South Korean airspace and conducting firing exercises over the East Sea and Yellow Sea, South Korea's military said.

Hackers believed to be from North Korea are casing out U.S. electric companies in preparation for a possible cyber attack - so says security firm FireEye. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff say the bombers flew from Anderson Air Force base in Guam and entered the Korean Air Defense Identification Zone at around 8:50 p.m.

The regime allegedly breached South Korean defense systems late past year and stole classified military documents, including allied war plans for a renewed military conflict on the Korean Peninsula and South Korean wartime defense plans.

The drills were conducted not long after Lee broke the news about the alleged cyberattacks to reporters.

North Korean hackers stole strategic plans drawn up by South Korea and the United States on how they would respond to an attack by the rogue regime as well as details of a "decapitation" plan to assassinate President Kim Jong Un, according to a report on Tuesday.

A pre-emptive strike against Pyongyang's leadership would be hard to undertake, but it's widely seen as the most realistic of the limited military options Seoul has to deny a nuclear attack from its rival.

The South's Yonhap news agency quoted Lee as saying that 235 gigabytes of military documents were taken. North Korea routinely denies responsibility. While early 80 percent of the documents had not yet been identified, they reportedly included contingency plans for South Korean special forces and information on military facilities and power plants, it said.

Commenting on the news is Chris Doman, security researcher at AlienVault, who is investigating hacking groups in North Korea.
