Facebook's Sandberg favours release of Russia-linked ads

Washington D.C. [United States], Oct 12: The United States House of Representatives' Intelligence Committee will release the copies of Facebook ads purchased by Russian groups during the 2016 USA presidential race.

Meanwhile, Congress has started multiple investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election, with lawmakers on both sides saying Russia meant to sow discord in the U.S., spread propaganda and sway the election to elect Donald Trump. She said the company had been too permissive at times in terms of how advertisers are allowed to target users, and that Facebook did not want to allow ads that may be "discriminatory".

During the closed door meeting, Sandberg told lawmakers that Facebook is working hard to ensure Americans 'understand what the propaganda is that they may or may not be reading, ' Conway told reporters after their discussion.

"Things happened on our platform in this election that should not have happened", Sandberg said during an interview in Washington with the Axios news website.

"We've asked for Facebook's help to scrub any personally identifiable information, but it's our hope that when that concludes we can release them publicly", Schiff said.

The Sandberg discussion is part of a growing feeling in the CBC that lawmakers need to draw the line with technology companies who they say are neglecting matters that hurt people of color on their platforms and within their companies.

The meeting came ahead of a November 1 House Intelligence Committee hearing at which Facebook, Twitter and Google are expected to testify.

In an interview with Axios on Thursday, Sandberg repeatedly refused to answer when asked whether Facebook had seen an overlap in how Russians and the Trump campaign targeted their ads toward users.

Schiff said Sandberg wanted to convey that the company is serious about the issue to members of Congress, some of whom have expressed concerns that the company was reluctant to share information and ensure that foreign governments don't wage information campaigns in USA elections.

Sandberg is meeting with elected officials in Washington this week ahead of a House hearing at which executives from Facebook, Twitter and Google are expected to testify.

Sandberg said, according to Schiff, that Facebook is 'determined to take whatever steps are necessary to ferret out foreign actors creating fake identities and using their platform'. "We know we have a responsibility to do everything we can to prevent this kind of abuse".

In response to the Russian ad buys, Facebook Chief Operating Officer said that company is hiring 4,000 new employees to oversee ads and content.

She also criticized Twitter's decision this week to remove a campaign video from Republican Representative Marsha Blackburn, who is running for Senate in Tennessee.
