San Francisco 49ers: NaVorro Bowman release a sad reality of rebuild

The San Francisco 49ers are shopping linebacker Navorro Bowman, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

"During that time, NaVorro was a key component of one of the best teams in the league and his passion for the game allowed him to quickly become a favourite of our faithful fans".

"Thursday evening, (head coach) Kyle (Shanahan) and I met with NaVorro, and from our conversation it became evident that going in different directions was best for both him and our team", Lynch said in a prepared statement.

Here we look at how the 49ers came to release Bowman and what it means for him and San Francisco going forward.

Bowman had been outspoken recently after his playing time on the field for the rebuilding 49ers.

Overall, Bowman made three straight Pro Bowls and was named a First-Team All-Pro four consecutive years between 2011 and 2015 (he missed the entire 2014 campaign due to a knee injury).

Bowman, who played his college football at Penn State University, was originally selected by the 49ers in the third round (91st pick overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Bowman, at age 29, will eventually be replaced by first round pick Reuben Foster even if Bowman isn't traded. But another injury a year ago to his Achilles tendon cost him 12 games, and he's been noticeably slower to react in the passing game this season. A three-time Pro Bowler, Bowman has recorded 709 tackles and 12.5 sacks during his eight-year career. They have a very good defense, and their offense is doing enough to win some games.

The eight-year veteran has played in all five games for the 49ers this year, tallying 22 total tackles. He's signed through the 2019 season with a base salary of $6.75 million this year and $8.7 million next year, per Spotrac.

With Bowman gone, the 49ers basically discarded the last major piece of their team that reached Super Bowl XLVII.
