October FIFA Ranking Provides Glimpse Into World Cup Draw Possibilities

According to the October rankings, Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium, Poland and France will be in pot 1 along with hosts Russian Federation. The seeded teams have been decided by October's FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, published today.

England, who qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation with wins over Slovenia and Lithuania, climbed three places to 12th in the rankings led by World Cup holders Germany, football's world governing body announced on Monday.

First of all, a team will be drawn from pot 1, and then another from pot 2. Slovakia, as the worst-ranked second-placed team, miss out. Russian Federation goes into the top pot, followed by the top seven-ranked teams, and the remaining 24 teams are spread into the three subsequent pots in order.

The teams, which already qualified for the next year's championship are hosts Russia, Brazil, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Belgium, Korea Republic, Saudi Arabia, Germany, England, Spain, Nigeria, Costa Rica, Poland, Egypt, Iceland, Serbia, France, Portugal, Panama, Uruguay, Colombia and Argentina. Based on the rankings, Switzerland (11th), Italy (15th), Croatia (18th) and Denmark (19th) will be in pot one and will play one of the four teams in pot two. After that, it all comes down to the playoffs and remaining African qualifiers.

As always, teams from the same region must be kept separate in the draw, aside from UEFA, where up to two European nations can be in the same group.

Russian Federation is top-seeded for the World Cup despite being ranked No. 65.
