You won't find that cupcake calorie counter anymore on Google Maps

Not only that, but the feature also revealed how many pink "mini cupcakes" in equivalent calories they would burn. "She cited the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, writing that "[as] many as 30 million people in the USA are estimated to have an eating disorder".

After a number of complaints on social media, Google told TechCrunch and Buzzfeed it was pulling the feature "based on strong user feedback" and would have it removed by this evening.

The app tallied calories in confectionary units: one mini cupcake equalling 110 calories.

Google Maps is dropping a new feature that shows you how many calories you would burn if you walked along a requested route.

One of the things that has inflamed so many people is Google's way of saying that an average person burns about 90 calories for each mile on foot.

The calorie count revealed itself when the user called up a driving route that covered a short distance, in order to promote the option of walking instead. According to The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD) 30 million people suffer from eating disorders in the USA and they have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Some twitter users said the feature could "shame" and even "trigger" those with eating disorders.

Following the feedback, Google has chose to remove the feature from its iOS app.

It's also unclear how accurate the calorie estimates are for individual users, considering the tool doesn't take into account factors like weight and height. Taylor Lorenz, politics writer for The Hill and freelance tech reporter over at Mic discovered that there was no way to opt out of or turn off the feature - a troubling issue, as people who could potentially suffer from an eating disorder relapse would essentially be barred from using the app.
