Worldwide study of breast cancer uncovers 72 new warning flags

"Of course, some of that is genetic, but three out of four women who develop breast cancer have no family history of the disease", explained Crestwood Women's Center Breast Care Manager, Julie McCain.

According to the National Cancer Institute, the risk of a man getting breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000 compared to a woman's risk.

"Many women are offered mammogram screenings when they are middle-aged, but if we know a woman has genetic markers that place her at higher risk of breast cancer, we can recommend more intensive screening at a younger age". "Women are very strong".

'There are some clear patterns in the genetic variants that should help us understand why some women are predisposed to breast cancer, and which genes and mechanisms are involved'.

"These findings may inform improved risk prediction, both for the general population and BRCA1 mutation carriers", says Associate Professor Roger Milne at Cancer Council Victoria in Melbourne.

Previous research about the presence of common BRCA1 and BRCA 2 gene mutations show they also account for about 17 percent of heritable breast cancer risk.

The additions almost double the number of genetic markers known to scientists, providing a trove of data for future studies to investigate in search of better understanding, new detection methods, and potentially more effective treatments.

However most of the new variants found were in gene-regulating regions.

U.S. co-author Professor Peter Kraft, from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, said the findings revealed a wealth of new information about the genetic mechanisms underlying the disease. "This should provide guidance for a lot of future research".

However, not all cancer cells carry this receptor - these are known as oestrogen-receptor negative. The World Health Organisation suggests breast cancer as one of the leading causes of mortality in women, especially in developing countries where most cases are detected in the later stages.

"We get grant funding through pharmaceutical companies and donations like the New Brunswick Fire Department", said Dorothy Reed, president and co-founder of the Sisters Network "It's hard economic times for everyone so when somebody just gives you a donation it's really a blessing".

It's not too late to make a donation to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Harrisburg.

KNOW THE SIGNS What are the red flag signs of bowel cancer, how common is it, what are the risks and can it be treated?

A further seven genes were identified specifically in association with breast cancers that lacked oestrogen receptors, which don't tend to respond to hormone based therapies.
