National Prescription Drug Take Back Day: Where to turn in your drugs

We join Mike Dennis, executive director of the Tri-County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, in encouraging participation in Saturday's Take Back Day. "Diversion of opioid painkillers, in particular, can contribute to the misuse of these drugs that has become a serious nationwide problem". Medication will be destroyed by TPD. Paul District Office in a press release from the Swanson's office.

Lieutenant over special operations at the police department, Bradley Smith says they participate in the event to protect citizens and the environment.

In Orland Park, drugs can be turned over at the police department on 151st and Ravinia on Saturday from 10 2 p.m. These items were removed from circulation and possible accidental ingestion by children and pets, as well as abuse by those who might be caught in that trap.

"The most pressing prescription to dispose of are opioids, but all medications and narcotics can be brought to the event", said Swanson.

The nation is in the midst of an opioid epidemic. "Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained - often unknowingly - from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet".

It is time to clean out your medicine cabinet and hand in unused, unneeded and expired medication.

President Trump is encouraging Americans to rid their medicine cabinets of leftover prescription drugs by turning them in to designated collection sites on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, Oct. 28. Directions on home disposal methods will also be available.

The collection stations can not accept liquid medication, medications that contain iodine, medical sharps or needles, thermometers and inhalers.

In addition, participants may dispose of solid, non-liquid medication (s) by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into a disposal box or into a clear sealable plastic bag.

One location for Dose of Reality is the Eveleth Police Department.
