Singapore now offers the world's most powerful passport

Among countries of the world, Nigeria has one of the poorest passports and can only visit 44 countries either without visa as they can have such issued to the traveller upon arrival.

It appears, when it comes to global travel, not all passports are created equal.

While Singapore has been rising up the ranks progressively, the USA passport has been sliding down the leaderboard since President Donald Trump took office.

Passport Index has become the most popular interactive online tool to display, sort and rank the world's passports.

It has been named among the five weakest passports with visa-free score of 35.

So what makes a passport powerful and why should you care?

This is a "testament of Singapore's inclusive diplomatic relations and effective foreign policy", he added.

The least powerful passport continues to be Afghanistan, with just 22 countries allowing visa-free access to its residents.

The Passport Index Global Passport Power Rank calculates the number of countries that holders of passports can enter either visa-free or by gaining a visa on arrival. Territories annexed to other countries are excluded.

The UK's score is 156, while the U.S. scored 154 - putting it in sixth place along with Canada, Ireland and Malaysia.

How do you obtain a passport from a country you don't live in? United Kingdom shares the fourth place with six European countries and Japan while the United States has fallen to joint-sixth after Turkey and the Central African Republic revoked their visa-free status to Americans.

Singapore takes the top spot this year out of 94 rankings assigned from a pool of 199 countries considered.

Singapore was followed by Germany as the report says citizens from the country can visit 158 countries without a visa. Over the Golden Week holiday this year, more than 6 million Chinese tourists vacationed overseas, favoring countries like Thailand which grant mainland visitors visas on arrival.
