CNN fact-checks White House briefing in real time

The White House scolded the media on Tuesday for being "obsessed" with Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation - a day after the special counsel brought criminal charges against three former aides to President Trump.

A Trump campaign supervisor encouraged Papadopoulos to make the trip "if it is feasible" on August 15, 2016.

"It was a volunteer position", Sanders said of Papadopoulos' role in the campaign.

Papadopoulos' lie to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents detailed the nature of his interactions with "foreign nationals" who he believed to be closely connected to senior Russian government officials.

The White House has acknowledged this one meeting as there is photographic evidence of it from Trump's own Instagram account (Papadopoulos is third from left).

The other news that broke Monday from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into alleged Russian collusion was that former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and campaign aide Rick Gates were indicated for a litany of financial crimes.

As she spoke, CNN cited its report that Trump was "seething" behind the scenes after reports of the indictments on Monday, and noted that Trump has frequently tweeted about the probe.

She also dismissed "today's announcement" - the indictment of Manafort and Gates - as having "nothing to do with the President, has nothing to do with the President's campaign or campaign activity", reiterating President Trump's first response.

"What the Clinton campaign did, what the DNC did was actually exchange money, they took a meeting", Sanders said.

She said Papadopolous "reached out" to other campaign officials but no meeting ever occurred.

All of the charges fell short of implicating Mr. Trump or campaign officials in conspiring with Russian Federation to affect the outcome of the election.

In fact, Papadopoulos was contacted after he learned he'd be joining the campaign, and the professor only mentioned the "thousands of emails" after he'd been on the Trump campaign for more than a month.
