Koenigsegg beats Bugatti to title of world's fastest auto

You know, the Raging Bull that used to hold the Nurburgring production vehicle record (the supercar set a lap time of 6:52) before the Porsche 911 GT2 RS grabbed it.

Per the standard format for setting a land speed record, Lilja made two runs in opposite directions within the space of an hour to eliminate the effects of gradients and wind, with the two recorded speeds then averaged.

Koenigsegg's attempt at the word record took place on an 11-mile section of the road between between Las Vegas and Pahrump in the Nevada desert that was specially closed by the authorities.

The Agera RS used in the attempt is the same one that recently set a time of 37.28 seconds for the 0-250-0 miles per hour run. For now the Agera RS holds the world production speed record. An 11-mile straight section of the highway was closed for the drives, which beat rival car-maker Bugatti's previous record of 268 miles per hour.

That record had been held by a Hennessey Venom GT which was recorded at 270.5mph in 2014. Lau also said that, since the event wasn't a tightly embargoed automaker event, some misinformation was leaking throughout the day - like a reported top speed of 291 miles per hour. All data on the day was recorded and verified on site by Racelogic. Earlier in October, Koenigsegg took another record from Bugatti, smashing the 0-400-0 km/h record.

It's also said that the Agera RS's surge of torque did not drop off after 240 miles per hour.

Koenigsegg's factory test driver Niklas Lija drove Agera RS with its 1,144bhp, 5.0-litre turbo V8 to set the new record. The tires that were used are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and Michelin reps were on hand to be sure everything was good with the tires.
