Over 50 Million Travelers Expected to Hit the Road this Thanksgiving

More than 1.4 million people will be traveling for the long holiday weekend - the most since 2007, according to AAA.

Nearly 86 percent of local travelers - 3.3 million - will be going by vehicle to their destinations, a 3.5 percent increase from last year's 3.2 million auto travelers.

USA motorists will take 45.5 million trips this holiday, a 1.5 percent increase over a year ago and also the most since 2005, even though gas prices are at their highest since 2014, AAA said. What is interesting is gas prices in Wisconsin are likely to be at their highest since 2014.

Los Angeles International Airport is expected to release its Thanksgiving travel projections on Friday.

The company also added that according to AAA's Leisure Travel Index, travelers taking to the skies will pay the lowest average in five years for a round-trip flight for the top 40 domestic routes.

Holiday travel is expected to rise 3.3 percent from 2016 numbers, an increase of 1.6 million travelers, AAA said. The organization said a strengthening economy and consumer confidence have prompted Americans to be willing to spend more on travel.

With Thanksgiving nears, people traveling across the country, and AAA is predicting that there will be up to 51 million travelers this coming week. The average price at AAA Three Diamond rated accommodations has jumped 14 percent to $176 per night, although rates at Two Diamond rates hotels are down 5 percent to $117. "These factors should help fuel consumer spending and generate a strong finish for the travel industry this year".

Holiday high: auto rental daily rates will hit a five-year holiday high at $70/day, which may be due to an increase in domestic demand and cost of newer vehicles. Nationally, Anaheim, site of the Disneyland Resort, is expected to be the second most popular Thanksgiving destination, according to the AAA.
