Victoria's Secret Fashion Show chaos: Katy Perry 'banned' from lingerie parade

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show chaos: Katy Perry 'banned' from lingerie parade

Gigi Hadid has announced she will longer be participating in the 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai.

While she was initially informed that she'd be able to gain access, the decision was apparently reversed after the government caught wind of a controversial incident from 2015, in which Perry donned a bright, glittery dress with sunflowers on it during a performance in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.

"For every artist who wants to perform in China, officials comb through their social-media and press reports to see if they have done anything deemed to be offensive to the country", the source told Page Six. It appears that Bella Hadid is still walking in the show, she posted on Instagram Wednesday saying she is "so excited".

Hadid did not mention the controversy this week when she tweeted about missing the show. "Love my VS family, and will be with all my girls in spirit!" the model wrote on Twitter Thursday.

The show, which will air on CBS on November 28, has also seen an exodus of fashion bloggers because the Chinese government has refused to give them visas, while television producers are struggling to get permission to shoot outside the Mercedes-Benz Arena venue, the New York Post Page Six reported.

Perry made global headlines in 2015 for her seemingly-political stage look. The abrupt announcement has many fans speculating as to why she will not be there. When Hadid was announced as attending the show this summer, she was over-the-moon.

Victoria's Secret didn't immediately respond to WWD's request for comment.

Speculation also has swirled over the participation of Russia's Julia Belyakova, Kate Grigorieva and Irina Sharipova, and Ukraine's Dasha Khlystun, after unconfirmed reports suggested they were denied Chinese visas. "I have learned to be very careful of how my actions can come off or be portrayed, and I'm hopeful you'll accept my apology", the post said.

Model Adriana Lima's visa has been held up due to an ongoing "diplomatic problem".

With the Victoria's Secret show based in the dynamic Chinese city, having one of the country's most viral performers join its cast feels on point.
