Cong releases first list of candidates for Gujarat polls

PAAS leaders threatened protests against Congress if it failed to give a decisive formula on the issue.

The polls will be conducted in Gujarat in two phases - December 9 and December 14.

Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said, "There was a communication gap with PAAS team".

In the first list there are 23 candidates from the Patidar community, including both Congress as well as PAAS nominees.

"We will also oppose any Patidar candidate fielded by the Congress", said PAAS leader Dinesh Bambhania, who is in-charge to negotiate quota issue with Congress.

After the waiting, and after speaking to PAAS leader Hardik Patel, Bamania gave an ultimatum to the Congress to declare its stand on the reservation status within 24 hours or else face the PAAS' opposition. A day after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray stood by Patidar leader Hardik Patel in the sex CD leak case, the Shiv Sena slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for resorting to "low level" politics in the run-up to the Gujarat Assembly elections. While the Congress has released a list of 77 names, it is expected to come out with another list on Monday. Counting of votes will take place on December 18.

The last date of filing nominations for the first phase of polls in Gujarat is November 21.

The ruling BJP has so far announced 106 candidates out of total 182 seats, by releasing two lists so far. Several rounds of meetings had been held with the PAAS leadership, including one with senior Congress leader and lawyer Kapil Sibal, who had explored the legal aspects of a quota for the community. "In the coming days, we will try to implement what we discussed", he said.

Bamania had claimed that Solanki initially had a brief meeting with PAAS leaders in Delhi on Friday and told them that there would be a detailed meeting again after the Congress Central Election Committee's meeting got over.
