Search continues for submarine with 44 crew members aboard

The US Navy said Saturday it ordered its Undersea Rescue Command based in San Diego to deploy to Argentina to help with the search. Words written on the flag read "Argentina, be strong".

"Strength for Argentina. We trust in God".

The calls that were detected 'did not correspond to the satellite phone of the submarine San Juan, ' he said on Monday, adding that the craft had oxygen for seven days.

Another submarine, the Salta, the same as the San Juan is docked in the base.

The submarine was 432km off Argentina's southern Atlantic coast when it sent its last communication early on Wednesday.

Galeazzi said the search would continue until the Argentine sub is found.

"Right now, we have waves of six to eight metres high with west to southwest winds of 40 knots, and unfortunately it appears that these conditions will remain for the next 48 hours", he said.

More than a dozen boats and aircraft - including the Brit ship HMS Protector - joined the search effort in the South Atlantic for the sub, which has enough oxygen for seven days.

The Southern Command of the United States (SOUTHCOM), based in Miami Florida, reported that a US Military aircraft with a crew of 21 members will depart from Jacksonville, the northern part of the state of Florida, and is expected to arrive this Sunday in the South American country.

"I don't want to create false expectations", Balbi said.

According to the protocol, the San Juan would have had to come to the surface or to activate a radio beacon of distress by noting the break in contact with its base.

It comes after it was revealed the submarine had reported a mechanical breakdown in its final communication.

"Regrettably, we have not yet had any contact with the submarine", the Argentinian navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said on Sunday morning.

The Navy's Poseidon patrol aircraft can deploy sonobuoys from the air to search for submerged submarines; these tube-launched buoys expand underwater into an array of sonar sensors that can get well below the surface layers of the ocean to either actively "ping" or quietly listen for sounds from a submarine. However, it would not be unusual for storms to cause delays, Balbi said.

At the Vatican, Pope Francis, a native of Argentina, said he was sending "fervent prayers" for the crew.

The second rescue system and supporting equipment will be transported using additional flights, and is scheduled to arrive in Argentina next week, the navy said in a statement.

The dramatic search has captivated the nation of 44 million, which recently mourned the loss of five citizens killed when a truck driver plowed through a bicycle path in New York City. Previously, the modern diesel-electric sub, built in 1983 and put into service in 1985, went through a mid-life overhaul, completed in 2013.
