Citizenship crisis claims Nick Xenophon Team's Kakoschke-Moore

Citizenship crisis claims Nick Xenophon Team's Kakoschke-Moore

A ninth Australian lawmaker resigned on Wednesday after confirming that she had a dual citizenship, The Australian reported.

Her mother was born in Singapore in 1957 to British parents.

The ruling conservative coalition could lose two House of Representative seats in by-elections next month over inherited citizenship.

The never-ending dual citizenship crisis has struck again!

"Usually where a parent is born outside of the United Kingdom they are unable to pass their citizenship on to their children where those children are also born outside of the UK".

She said she had discovered that she was entitled to dual citizenship with Britain late last week via her mother, who was born in Singapore before the country gained independence, and she was informed by the UK Home Office that this meant she was entitled to citizenship.

Storer had wanted to replace Nick Xenophon when he quit the Senate for state politics.

She said she would ask that her case be referred to the High Court.

"He is a very good person but there are issues here about him not being a member of the party", Mr Xenophon said of Mr Storer.

Xenophon is contesting whether Kakoschke-Moore's spot will be filled by a count back of the Senate vote, or filled by a casual vacancy, suggesting that legal advice he has received could mean it would be a casual vacancy.

The NXT will argue that Storer should not get the spot because he is no longer in the party.

'My time as a senator has been the most fulfilling of my life, ' she said.

She said she was of the understanding for her "entire life" that she was not eligible for British citizenship. He said the initial legal advice was that she was in very strong position.

The Senate will then determine whether to make any further High Court referrals.

Sky Kakoschke-Moore, who was only elected to parliament previous year after working as a political adviser, has made the shock announcement in Adelaide - making her the ninth federal MP forced out since the citizenship crisis unravelled in July.
