Ex-Vikings Randy Moss, Steve Hutchinson among semifinalists for hall of fame

The Modern-Era nominees for the Class of 2018 will be trimmed to 15 finalists in January.

Below, Gil Brandt ranks all 27 modern-era semifinalists, further breaking down who he thinks should make it as a finalist and, finally, who, in his opinion, should be included in the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2018. Fifteen years later, they could again share the NFL's brightest stage, earning the game's greatest individual honor at the same time. An eight-time Pro Bowl selection, Dawkins finished his Eagles career in 2008 as the franchise's all-time leader in games played (183) and interceptions (34).

With his ability to not only rush at a high level, but block and catch as well, James was one of the most versatile and dynamic running backs in all of football for his 11 NFL seasons. He played 224 regular season games. He's a five-time Pro Bowl selection, and his rare statistics could help his case to join teammates Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks in Canton. Barber is the only player in league history to record at least 45 interceptions and at least 25 sacks. He was the NFL's best pass-rusher for a sustained period, almost a decade, as he led the league with 101.5 sacks from 1998 to 2005.

Still, even after the injury, James ended up making the Pro Bowl two more times and rushed for over 1,000 yards in 5 following seasons. He was voted All-Pro twice (1983, 1984) and named to four Pro Bowls (1983-86). During his time with the Bucs, Barber compiled a total of 28 sacks which are second-most all-time among defensive backs, and the most all-time by a cornerback. Rice was not only the NFL's sack king for almost a decade, he was also dominant in the postseason, with seven sacks in five playoff games for the Buccaneers.
