PUBG will change for China and align with 'socialist core values'

Its bloody gameplay was initially rejected by China's strict censorship laws "because it severely deviates from socialist core values". The game, developed by South Korea's Bluehole Studio, throws up to 100 players on an island and forces them to kill one another battle royale style.

Chinese gaming giant Tencent Holdings Ltd is bringing "Playerunknown's Battleground", the world's hottest video game, to China, but with a twist. Because of that, Tencent said it will work closely with PUBG Corporation and the Chinese authorities to change the game in necessary ways to keep it legal in the country.

China has made a decision to allow a violent multiplayer shoot-em-up game that's become the world's top-selling title into the country, but only after messages were added to reflect the country's socialist ideology.

"We will further highlight the teamwork and fair play spirit, making sure it's in accordance with socialist core values and traditional Chinese cultures and moral norms", Tencent said in a statement provided by the outlet. It'll also be interesting to see how all of this changes the competitive aspect of the game. Just this year Tencent, known for publishing popular mobile games like Honour of Kings, saw its market value rise to $520 billion United States dollars, making it the first Chinese company to crack $500 billion. The game also won "Best Multiplayer Game" and "PC Game of the Year" at this year's Golden Joysticks Awards. Many of these players have been coming for China, a country that represents roughly half of the game's population but still has players enter games in non-Asian servers such as EU, NA and OCE. Recently, NetEase added in-game banners saying things like "safeguard national security, safeguard world peace" in a public show of support for China's ever-tightening grip on entertainment media.
