UK police at reported incident at Oxford Circus station

British Transport Police said officers were on the scene responding to an incident but gave no further details.

Oxford Circus is one of the British capital's most popular retail streets and many would have been finishing work to enjoy their Friday nights or Christmas shopping.

"Passengers at the station then self-evacuated the station onto Oxford Circus and Regent Street area of London", a statement said. "Avoid area if possible".

The police have not located any casualties at this time.

"The station is now closed, please avoid the area at this time", BTP said on Twitter. Shortly afterwards the Metropolitan Police also took similar calls. Police said they were responding "as if the incident is terrorist-related" but has not said whether they believe it is.

An eyewitness told AFP she saw people running from the Oxford Circus station, which is particularly busy because of stores offering Black Friday discounts.

"At this stage, we are examining the circumstances of the incident which resulted in the station being evacuated".

Describing the panic, BBC producer Helen Bushby said: "I was just walking down from the BBC towards the Tube and there was a mass stampede away from the Tube as fast as they could".

Jace Tyrrell, of the New West End Company, said it was a relief once it was confirmed to be a false alarm.

The police said they found no evidence of any suspects or any gunfire and informed the public that it was safe to return to the area.
