Mount Agung erupts for the second time

Agung also had a minor eruption on Tuesday but authorities have not raised its alert status from the second highest, which would widen the exclusion area and prompt a large evacuation of people. However it warned that the movement of ash cloud is highly unpredictable and flights could still be cancelled at short notice. Virgin Airlines cancelled several flights between the island and Australia.

Per NPR, volcanologist Gede Suantika told Reuters "The activity of Mount Agung has entered the magmatic eruption phase, it is still spewing ash at the moment, but we need to monitor and be cautious over the possibility of a strong, explosive eruption".

Meanwhile, Indonesia's Disaster Mitigation Agency said that "tourism in Bali is still safe, except in the danger (zone) around Mount Agung", referring to an area that extends to a radius of up to 7.5 km (4.7 miles) from the summit, the BBC reported.

There have been no new evacuations in Bali and a six kilometre exclusion zone around the volcano has not been extended.

The ash cloud is said to be moving eastward from Bali towards the island of Lombok, and the main global airport there has been closed entirely.

Emergency authorities have handed out eerie masks to local residents and tourists trapped on the island as fears grow about an imminent major eruption.

Magma has been detected close to the surface on Mount Agung.

Several thousand people were affected by Saturday's flight cancellations.

Many returned home after the volcano's activity waned, but fresh smoke has sparked a further exodus and around 25,000 people have been evacuated to more than 200 temporary shelters.

The Mt. Agung volcano, which towers over eastern Bali at a height of just over 3,000 meters (9,800 feet), is about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the island's main tourist areas of Kuta and Seminyak.

Indonesia sits on the "Pacific Ring of Fire" and has more than 120 active volcanoes.

The mountain's last major eruption occurred in 1963, killing more than 1,000 people.
