Women Come Forward In Droves To Accuse Massage Workers Of Sexual Assault

As BuzzFeed reports, female customers have accused massage therapists of groping and penetrating them during their massages, but because Massage Envy management does not require its franchises to notify law enforcement when a sexual assault allegation has been made, these women have been blockaded when attempting to file reports.

Several other women also came forward to speak about similar encounters they allegedly had during spa and massage sessions at Massage Envy outlets. The manager refused to end the current spa session and instead she "invited me in to talk about my services", Ingram claimed. Massage Envy is the largest massage franchise in the United States. The report published over the weekend comes amid a wave of sexual assault complaints against high-profile American men, which has compelled some companies to revisit their policies against workplace sexual misconduct.

In response to the more than 180 allegations of sexual assault by employees of Massage Envy, the company says it's not liable - the franchise owners are.

Ingram, who had detailed the incident in court, said that once she got home from the spa that day in 2015, she called back to speak to a manager but was ignored. In a statement to ABC News, Massage Envy said that each incident was "heartbreaking" for them.

The Buzzfeed "article references 180 reported incidents", the company said in a statement to The Washington Post.

One of the accusers, identified as Susan Ingram, shared the harrowing details of her experience at her local Massage Envy in West Chester, Pennsylvania. "That's why we will never stop reinforcing to our franchisees the importance of a safe environment".

Massage Envy is now reviewing their policies, USA Today reported.

The only thing not appropriate there was the lack of action against alleged perpetrators - and Deiter was just one of many employed and reportedly protected by Massage Envy, which would enter the names of the offending therapists in the database, but would do little to fix the situation.

Ingram's account was one of many that highlighted the company's problematic neglect, even though the company claims to have "worked hard to create the industry's most stringent, rigorous policies" for hiring, screening, and training therapists.
