Year's brightest supermoon coming to OR skies Sunday night

That's because of the "moon illusion", the cognitive phenomenon that makes the moon appear bigger to us when it's closer to the horizon than when it's further up in the sky.

The term "super-moon", which means that the full moon coincides with the perimeter, is not scientific, but was created in 1979 by astrologer Richard Nole. On that day, our satellite will be approaching the Earth very close to 358,400 kilometers, so the moon will be 7% larger and 16% brighter than an ordinary full moon. You also have the option of seeing the moon live online via Europe's virtual telescope project. The moon's average distance is 238,000 miles. The variations in apparent size and illumination amount to few percent but they can improve the already incredible sight of the full moon, making a supermoon worth looking up for.

For sky watchers in the United States, the full moon begins at 10:46 a.m. ET on December 3. At most, the moon will be about 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons, according to NASA.

At that moment, the moon will not be visible over most of North America. The celestial event will be visible for anyone who is located somewhere without dense cloud cover, marking the final notable moon appearance of the year.

Full moons normally occur when the Earth is directly in line between the moon and the sun. The moon should sit near the constellation Taurus, though it shouldn't be hard to spot.

At it's closest point, the moon will pass 222,135 miles from earth.

If you somehow manage to miss this supermoon or forget about it, don't worry: January has two supermoons!
