Sauber confirm Leclerc & Ericsson, as Alfa Romeo livery revealed

The Swiss Formula One outfit Alfa Romeo Sauber have confirmed that Sweden's Marcus Ericsson and young Frenchman Charles Leclerc will compete for the world title in their rebranded auto in 2018.

Alfa Romeo will return to the sport after an absence of 30 years as Sauber's title sponsor, with the Swiss team strengthening its Ferrari ties, having cancelled its planned Honda partnership.

Giovinazzi, who served as Ferrari's third driver in 2017, has two Sauber race outings to his name, the Italian having stood in for the injured Wehrlein at this season's two opening rounds, with a best finish of 12th in Australia.

The 20-year-old, a member of Ferrari's young driver academy, won this year's Formula 2 championship with seven wins and 282 points, 72 ahead of Artem Markelov.

The auto is predominantly white with red accents, and large Alfa Romeo logos after the Swiss team confirmed a deal with the manufacturer.

Giovinazzi will be the reserve driver instead, taking part in Friday practice sessions.

"Formula One is the natural reference point for a marque like this", he said. "I think the guns are loaded in a different way".

"It's an awesome opportunity for me but also for the team", said Ericsson, whose financial support has always been linked to Rausing and the Tetra Laval packaging group.

"I am very happy to be entering Formula 1 in 2018", said Leclerc.
