Several flights to and from Atlanta canceled at Jacksonville International Airport

Officials still have not determined what sparked the fire that shut down power at the world's busiest airport, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International, on Sunday and are reportedly refusing to rule out terrorism.

A sudden power outage caused by a fire in an underground electrical facility brought the airport to a standstill.

"There's a lot of other issues downstream to all other airports, where flights should be arriving and departing, connecting to Atlanta, that are going to be disrupted as well". They waited at RDU for hours only to learn their flight was delayed until Monday morning.

Flying home for the holidays was more of a headache than usual for those traveling through the Atlanta airport on Sunday.

Police announced shortly after 6 p.m. ET that they planned to evacuate the airport - some five hours after the initial power outage, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Georgia Power's top executive apologized for the power outage that crippled Atlanta's airport, saying he realized that it inconvenienced thousands of people. Delta got them a hotel room and put them on a Monday flight to Atlanta. The blackout forced airlines to either cancel flights altogether or divert them. Atlanta's Mayor Kasim Reed says a fire caused the massive outage and also damaged backup systems that are created to keep the lights and essential power on during an emergency.

More details about the Atlanta airport outage can be found here. The utility said the fire caused extensive damage, but that it hoped to have power restored by midnight.

The blackout led the Federal Aviation Administration to declare a ground stop at the airport, preventing Atlanta-bound flights in other airports from taking off and causing inbound flights to be diverted.

CNN reported all flights out of Atlanta have been canceled for Sunday and all arrivals have been halted.

"When the power goes out in one of the world's biggest airports. yikes!"

Thousands of people are stranded Monday morning at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where more than 1,000 flights were grounded just days before the start of the Christmas travel rush.

The outage left passengers sitting in planes on the tarmac for hours.

That wasn't enough to comfort Jeff Smith, 46, of Pittsburgh, who ended up stuck in a plane on the tarmac for three hours after it landed.

It is raining in the Atlanta area, but it is not known if the weather played a role in the outage. Escalators and elevators were also affected, but no word if anyone was stuck in an elevator.

Country music star Travis Tritt tweeted he was stuck in Fort Lauderdale, FL, because of the outage.

Hartsfield-Jackson is the busiest airport in the world, serving 150 domestic destinations and 75 worldwide airports in 50 countries.

The airport handles some 275,000 passengers a day.
