Police responding to the scene "discovered a woman and her husband had been savagely attacked by two pit bulls", according to a statement reported by Lex18. "The deputies determined that the dogs did not belong to the couple".

Lorraine Brock Saylor, 66, and her husband were attacked by two pit bulls Sunday morning, Bell County officials said.

One of the dogs died. The dog was then put down by the Bell County Sheriff's Department and Bell County Animal Shelter. And the other ran off and wasn't found until 2 p.m. Monday.

Investigators discovered that the dogs belonged to Johnny Dale Lankford, who was being held in the Bell County Detention Center on charges of second-degree assault, domestic violence, and second-degree unlawful imprisonment from December 22.

The woman was declared dead at the scene, and emergency responders transported the man to an area hospital.

Investigators with the sheriff's office are warning residents no to engage with the unsafe animal if they come across it. The caller said they were pit bulls. "She anxious more about neighbors and friends than she did herself, as Johnny's the same way, they're just a very giving couple".

In that instance, their owner had left them with their dad while she took care of personal issues.

The Bell County Sheriff's Department said it received a call at 10:20 a.m. Highway 66 in the Wiser Branch area of Arjay about the dog attack.

Two pit bulls mauled one of their neighbors to death on Christmas Eve.

The names of the victims were not being release pending notification of other family members, according to Bell County Coroner Jay Steele.
