Patrick Mahomes to start Week 17 for Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes to start Week 17 for Chiefs

Mahomes - selected after a draft day trade in which Kansas City surrendered a pair of first-round picks and a third-rounder - has yet to play during the regular season.

However Mahomes performs shouldn't have any bearing on this season, but it could reveal a lot for the Chiefs' plans next season and beyond. With that in mind, Reid made a decision to give the rookie his first start.

The Kansas City Chiefs will start quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Sunday against the Denver Broncos over Alex Smith, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Veteran quarterback Alex Smith, who started the team's first 15 games this season, will work with the scout team this week while Mahomes gets the first-team reps in practice. His reemphasis on Hunt and dialing up shot plays for Smith has been part of a Chiefs offensive resurgence including averaging 30.75 points over the past month - up seven points over the previous four games.

"Every snap that he gets is a valuable snap for him whenever he has that chance of getting in there", Reid told reporters during his Wednesday press conference. That means we'll get to see Patrick Mahomes.

Smith sat out the last week's of 2013 and 2014, paving way for then-backup quarterback Chase Daniel to start.

In truth, it's been humming along quite well during a three-game win streak, and there is some risk in losing that momentum.

For the Chiefs, this move makes sense.

Yes, it's a meaningless game on Sunday against the Broncos.
